In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Bale) is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it.
Unlike most films of this genre Equilibrium has heart and depth. It is a story of humanity. The premise has been done (as noted in all the other reviews) but the execution is nothing short of brilliant. I don't even feel this is really an action film though the action sequences are a riot (GUN KATA!!!) Bale's performance takes us from a cold blooded vicious butcher who falls into the realm of human emotion for the first time in his entire life. It is his character's transformation that is at the heart of this awe-inspiring film. The writing and character development are top notch.<br/><br/> I was genuinely moved by this film. Those who, I feel, loathe it did not take it for what it was but for what they wanted it to be.<br/><br/> 9.5/10 (this film is almost up there with Blade Runner, Aliens, 2001, 12 monkeys, and the original Matrix.)
George Orwell meets The Matrix.<br/><br/>Equilibrium<br/><br/>A friend recommended this film to me saying it was a "Matrix Rip off" - I think that best describes this film. Before I go on I want to say that the film is worth seeing if you liked the Matrix and is an acceptable film. I won't give away any of the important storyline (ahem!) so you can read without having any spoilers (which I hate!)<br/><br/>Well probably like yourself I've seen the Matrix and indeed love the Matrix. For me it changed slightly the way I view films similar to "Pulp fiction" In that after viewing every single film now has a higher bar with which to contend with. Matrix changed the way we deal with time and movement in films - verging artistic filming with slow motion. (Before you say yes I know the Matrix borrowed heavily from the artistic concept of the film "Ghost in the Shell" so every film normally copies - it's how much!!!) So we come to the films that try and emulate this. Equilibrium is most definitely one of them. I'm still trying to decide if it's a hats off recognition film of the Matrix and basically saying "we loved the Matrix here's a film similar - coz we miss it." or " let's blatantly copy the Matrix style and see if we can pull it off."<br/><br/>let's go with the Hats off - tipped to the Matrix. The storyline follows a George Orwell 1984 type world based in the future in which emotions are the root of all evil, so to combat them they have banned Art and Literature, tactile contact - having objects and things of beauty (or anything which makes you show expression of emotion). Believing this to cause all the negative emotions in humans that ultimately lead to War/Murder/Hate/destruction. So everyday they have to take their dose of drugs which turns them into "Vulcans" In this case the film has many of the qualities that the Matrix has - Style and movement/ fight scenes in slow motion. clever moves. However the filming is a little like "Dr Who/ Blake7" directs the "The Matrix"<br/><br/>Based on the mathematical probability of statistical analysis of every "shootout" there ever was - here's the best way to move in a gun fight. Ahem! Mmmmm that's what I thought, Tai chi meets Jon Woo style fighting. Does it work - well yes it does. It looks surprisingly good at times and is believable (come on - we are forgiving). Christian Bale (American Psycho) who is always goodan actor is a good choice for a lead. He has haunted looks and credible acting. Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings FOTR)his partner in the beginning is greatwell. I feel without these actors the films may have well died a death - thank God it didn't<br/><br/>So we end up with a film that's not too bad! Watchable and enjoyable and if it is indeed aimed at being a Matrix tribute film then it's achieved that. In fact we even have our own version of "the Lobby" scene.<br/><br/>Bottom line if you liked the Matrix you'll like this. It's not brilliant but it's okay.<br/><br/>6/10<br/><br/>Russ
A preachy parable stylized with a touch of John Woo bullet ballet.
A simple explanation could be:<br/><br/>Preston was driven and watched from the very beginning by Dupont to stop the dose and start feeling so he can gain the trust of the resistance and lead to themDupont tells him at the end. With or without the gun swap, he would not have been arrested before delivering the resistance.<br/><br/>Another theory is:<br/><br/>When Brandt takes Preston before Dupont (after Preston is seen crying because he was unable to stop Mary's execution), it is revealed that Brandt's weapons, not Preston's, were the ones used to kill the sweeper team in the Nethers. When Brandt thinks about this, he realizes that Preston must have switched guns with him, and we flashback to the scene in the industrial section of the Nethers, where Brandt offers Preston his gun to kill the sense offenders lined up against the wall. Since this sequence occurs after Preston massacres the sweepers to save the dog, people assume this is a major plot hole, and it is, but it was not intended to be.<br/><br/>In the original script, the following is written: And he flashes back:<br/><br/>TO HIS CAR: The house in the zone burning in the background.<br/><br/>BRANDT: Who will be left to watch…<br/><br/>A beat. Then Preston hands Brandt his gun. It should be noted that excerpt has been taken from an early version of the script (the version in which Mary lives), but the idea is the same: the switch actually took place right before the first time Preston saves the dog from being killed. We actually see Preston hand a gun that was laying on the hood of the car to Brandt before the dog execution scene (although not Brandt handing a gun to Preston), which is never alluded to in the accusations scene.<br/><br/>Further to previous answers, there are scenes and shots missing from the final cut of Equilibrium that would have explained the "gun swap" clearly. Unfortunately, they were left out for any number of reasons suchnoticeable camera shake, bad lighting/framing, lack of time/money etc. The "gun swap" plot point does actually work but now needs a little clarification. The tracking system used by Dupont's aid does not work by identifying a gun's specific location but by locating the specific gun that any Cleric is carrying at a given time. Within the the context of the film, the gun swap can be explainedfollows:<br/><br/>1. Preston kills the sweeper team in the Nethers with his own gun.<br/><br/>2. Later, when Brandt asks Preston to kill the assembled line of sense offenders, Preston hesitates and Brandt offers him his own gun. Taking it, Preston, (sensing an opportunity) swaps it with his own gun, giving Brandt the gun he used to kill the sweeper team.<br/><br/>3. Later, when Brandt has brought Preston before Dupont, the gun that killed the sweepers is located on or about Brandt's person. Pulling the gun from his pocket and reading the serial code stamped on the bottom, Brandt realises that Preston has swapped the guns. Admitting this to Dupont, Preston interrupts by saying that the only reason Brandt has his gun is because Brandt took it from him when he arrested him. This alleviates Brandt's possession of Preston's gun by making it sound like it was Brandt who killed the sweeper team with his own gun. Unfortunately, Dupont never uses the tracking system to try and locate Brandt's gun, which is actually in Preston's possession and would therefore discredit Preston's explanation.<br/><br/>4. However, Dupont isn't so easily dupedhe is shown in his private anteroom at the climax of the film with Brandt next to him, leaning on the desk. This implies that Dupont had allowed Brandt to explain himself and then used the tracking system to locate Brandt's gun on Preston or that it was all part of a master plan and he was just playing along with Preston. It is now up to the viewer to decide which piece of exposition they like the most.<br/><br/>5. Finally, all of this is somewhat moot, given that during the murder scene in the Nethers, Preston is using two guns to kill the guards. At no time do you see Preston handing more than one gun to Brandt. Preston hands Brandt a gun just before the sweeper team starts killing the dogs, and then he swaps a gun with him during the raid scene after the murders in the Nether have taken place. Assuming that the switch did take place between these two times, only one gun would have exchanged hands. When you factor this in, it becomes more than just a plot hole and branches into the realm of film goof. It shows that the regime is rotten to the core and all about power rather than preventing violent emotions, Dupont's office is filled with illicit art, decoration etc and he quotes poetry to Preston in their final confrontation. Dupont (and by implication Brandt and the inner circle) is a hypocrite who breaks the society's own rules by committing 'sense' crime, whilst executing others for doing the same. Preston may suspect this all alonghe notes Dupont's anger in a society where it is forbidden and his sliding his hand across the table in much the same wayPreston enjoys the sensation of running his hand along the handrail at the train station. Finally, Dupont states to Preston, "I'm life, I live, I breathe…I feel!"
